Peter Burgess is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the École normale supérieure (ENS) in Paris. His research and writing focuses on the relationship between technology, politics and values. Burgess grew up in the U.S. Midwest and earned degrees from the University of Colorado, Iowa and Chicago, and Columbia University, then continued graduate studies in Germany and France before settling in Norway. He has taught at the ENS in Paris since 2016.

He is the author, most recently, of “Security after the Unthinkable: Terror and Disenchantment in Norway” (Manchester University Press, 2024) and “Geopolitics of Risk: From the Possibility of Danger to the Uncertainty of Threat” (Cavalier Bleu, 2026).
